Assessments

Comprehensive psychoeducational and social-emotional assessment services for children and their families.

Are you wondering if a psychological assessment is the right choice for your child? At The CAP Centre, our assessments can provide a clear picture of how your child learns, their unique strengths, and the areas where they may need extra support. With this deeper understanding, you’ll feel more confident about how to help your child succeed both at school and at home.

A psychoeducational assessment focuses on learning, attention, and academic skills. It may result in diagnoses such as Learning Disability or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and can identify a range of barriers that may affect school performance. You’ll receive practical recommendations tailored to your child’s needs that can help inform the creation of a detailed Individual Education Plan (IEP) featuring valuable academic accommodations and supports for your child. The CAP Centre has a good reputation among school boards, and we have a strong word of mouth referral network, given the high quality and usefulness of our assessments.

A comprehensive psychological assessment goes further, exploring social and emotional wellbeing in addition to learning and attentional functioning. This process can screen for concerns such as anxiety, depression, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, giving you valuable insight into your child’s overall functioning.

Our assessments are thorough and collaborative. They combine standardized testing with interviews and questionnaires completed by parents, teachers, and often the child themselves. This ensures we gain a well-rounded perspective of your child. It is important to us that our assessments capture each client’s strengths along with challenges, painting a picture that includes hobbies, interests and real-life functioning, being sure to include important, personal information that goes beyond reporting a set of test scores.

It is important to us that our reports are helpful and written in down-to-earth, accessible language so that parents and teachers can make the most of the results. We also are prepared to meet with school teams to discuss the findings and to review your child’s Individual Education Plans with you upon request.

Every assessment is supervised by a Registered Psychologist including our practice owners, Dr. Daliah Chapnik and Dr. Caryn Moulton. All of our psychometrists are well trained in the theory and practice of assessment and are committed to the highest level of care and accuracy, helping to ensure that all conclusions and recommendations are presented in a way that complies with up to date, sound clinical practices, and meets the standards of local school boards and private schools.

You can rest assured that your child’s assessment results will reflect your child’s strengths and needs and will provide a strong foundation for next steps, whether at school, at home, or in therapy.

How are our assessments different?

Not all psychological assessments are created equal. Assessments at The CAP Centre include:

  • 3-4 testing sessions of at longest 2 hours each allowing for multiple opportunities to observe your child and prevent the fatigue or overwhelm of overly long testing sessions.
  • for all comprehensive assessments, a senior clinician or supervising psychologist is involved in testing and clinical interviewing
  • consultation of collateral sources of information (teacher input, historical report card review).
  • Team approach to testing – psychometrists who are well trained in the administration of all standardized testing, clinical supervisors who are committed to the highest quality care, and registered psychologists who oversee all data and formulation/diagnoses.

Treatments

We also provide psychological treatment for children, adolescents, and families.

Treatment often begins with a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. Once we have a clearer understanding of you and/or your child’s needs, we design a treatment plan with your collaboration. Treatment length is difficult to determine as it depends on a number of factors. It is important to note that at The CAP Centre, we are committed to delivering evidence-based treatments that have been proven to be efficacious. We strive to meet your treatment needs in the most effective and efficient way possible. At the conclusion of therapy, you can expect to be armed with valuable resources and coping mechanisms that can be used in everyday life. We may use one or several different therapeutic methods, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Emotion-Focused Therapy
  • Individual, Group, or Family Therapy
  • Single Session Therapy
